The latest 4K Ultra HD Consumer Market Tracking report of Futuresource Consulting, an analysis company, pointed out that the ultra HD TV market has seen significant growth. The number of 4K content is also growing, but the content seen by consumers is very limited.
Futuresource predicts that in 2017, 35% of the televisions sold worldwide will be 4K televisions, and the global coverage of 4K televisions will reach 8%.
High Dynamic Range (HDR) has become a new battlefield for equipment manufacturers. However, the transmission of consumer information is more difficult than the improvement of resolution. Since there is no universally accepted standard to define how much better than the standard dynamic range devices can be called HDR, the term HDR is facing the risk of devaluation. There are many products with HDR name but poor performance on the market, with little visible improvement.
The UHD streaming media market continues to heat up. With the launch of Roku, Amazon and Apple's new ultra-high definition devices, 4K models have accounted for 36% of the streaming media players sold in 2017.
Video on demand providers will continue to accelerate their development in ultra-high definition content. Netflix has more than 1000 hours of ultra-high definition content, and Apple, Google and Amazon also regard ultra-high definition as "a new focus. The pricing of 4K resources on Apple iTunes is the same as HD, which makes Amazon and Google also reduce the price of 4K content resources.
Tristan Veale, market analyst of Futuresource, said: "Ultra HD content has increasingly become the standard configuration of mainstream SVOD services. Many services do not charge extra for providing ultra HD content.
By the end of 2017, more than 33 million households worldwide will have 4K TVs and SVOD services with ultra-high definition content. SVOD providers will not face the same content transmission problems as broadcasters, and IP transmission greatly reduces interoperability problems. Therefore, the amount of content on these platforms is expected to continue to grow.
