LCD (liquid crystal display) TV manufacturers use quantum dot (QD) technology, curved screen and other innovative technologies to meet the challenges posed by OLEDs. The latest research shows that in order to improve the consumer value of LCD TV market, 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) enhanced color LCD TV with QD technology will be launched in 2015, and the global shipment is expected to reach 1.3 million sets. By 2018, the shipment of QD TV will increase to 18.7 million sets.
Paul Gray, European Research Director of IHS DisplaySearch, said: "Although LCD technology undoubtedly dominates the TV field, manufacturers still continue to innovate in order to bring more added value to consumers. With more and more colorful TV content, the introduction of 4K ultra-high definition TV is bound to set off a new wave of technological innovation. Curved TV is also one of the hot spots this year, but its growth potential is limited. We predict that the curved TV market will reach its peak next year."
According to the quarterly research report on TV design and features of IHS DisplaySearch, ITU Rec.2020 international standard makes TV color exceed the existing high-definition TV standard, and color fidelity reaches a new level. Gray said: "Although broadcasters and photographers have begun to produce images with new standards, the TV manufacturing industry has just begun to meet this challenge, so it will take some time for TV equipment and content to match."

Gray added: "Quantum dot technology is an innovative technology used by the LCD industry to create a more realistic picture, which is very close to the full visual range of the human eye. Broadcasting companies are finalizing the broadcast content of ultra-high definition TV, but it is certain that they want to provide more TV content for UHD picture quality, not just the improvement of pixels. No matter how visual acuity of a person is, more rich colors are suitable for any size of screen, and The subtle shadows can increase the realism of the picture. Quantum dot technology is a response of the LCD industry to the OLED technology challenge, and it also proves that there is still room for innovation in the LCD industry technology. "
Curved LCD TV
Another response to the OLED technology challenge is the appearance of curved LCD TV, which also shows that LCD has another innovation opportunity. IHS DisplaySearch predicts that the shipment of curved TV will reach 1.8 million units in 2014, and will reach the peak of 8.2 million units in 2016 and 2017. As consumers in Western Europe are keen on unique designs, and the TV market share is mainly occupied by Samsung, IHS DisplaySearch analysts predict that Western Europe will become the main market for curved TVs, with 2.6 million units shipped in 2016 and 2017.
Gray, director of European research at IHS DisplaySearch, said: "Curved TV is an industry style fashion, which is similar to the appearance of the TV when the first LED backlight board appeared. In a certain period, this fashionable appearance will be abandoned, but its advantage value will be retained forever. For example, the low power consumption advantage of thin TV will be retained. Although the fashionable appearance is easy to be replaced by new things, it is still a key element to maintain TV value and attract consumer interest."
