At IFA 2018 this year, Samsung may launch its first 8K TV, and Sony is also rumored to launch its first 8K TV.
8K LCD TV is coming
This is not the first 8K TV on the market. Sharp has launched 8K TV products before. However, with the introduction of HDMI 2.1 standard, these TVs may become the first "real" 8K TVs. The so-called "true" means that you can really receive 8K signals through a single HDMI cable.
Before officially entering the 8K market, many well-known TV manufacturers are waiting for the completion of the next generation HDMI standard. HDMI 2.1 supports higher bandwidth and can transmit 8K resolution content up to 120fps (lossless compression). 8K video still needs a better video compression format, but if a TV supports HDMI 2.1, users can rest assured that they can connect an external video player to the TV later.
The IFA in Berlin in September this year may become a milestone of 8K. According to South Korea's ETNews, Samsung will launch an 8K TV product line in IFA 2018, and then launch "8K QLED" TV. According to Forbes, Samsung is likely to release 8K TVs in multiple sizes. At CES Consumer Electronics Show in January this year, Samsung demonstrated a prototype 8K TV.
It is said that Sony is likely to launch its new flagship model Z9F/ZF9 LCD TV and A9F/AF9 OLED TV later this year. This TV, called Z9F (American version) or ZF9 (European version), is said to be an 8K TV. Sony also demonstrated the 8K prototype at CES this year. This model uses Sony's next-generation video processor X1 Ultimat. Sony also applied for the "8K HDR" trademark and LOGO.
According to Digitimes, Chinese TV manufacturers will also set foot in 8K TV, but may focus on the Chinese household market first.
8K OLED may be late
For many years, LG Display Company has been talking about the 10.5 generation production line that can produce larger and more advanced OLED TVs, but the plan has been repeatedly postponed, and it is expected that large-scale production will not start until the end of 2019 or after 2020.
Earlier this year, LG demonstrated the 88 inch 8K OLED prototype, but given the price of the LG 77 inch 4K OLED TV, it is clear that much work needs to be done to reduce the cost of this 8K TV. For many years, LG has also been demonstrating the prototype 8K LCD TV, so it may be the first to promote LCD TV.

Forbes reported that the arrival of 8K OLED TV may be two years later than that of 8K LCD TV.
The 10.5 generation production line can reduce the cost of large size 8K TVs and make consumers affordable. The "generation" number of the production line corresponds to the size of the motherboard, from which smaller panels will be cut. These factories are usually most suitable for producing 65 inch and above screens, which means that most 8K TV products will be more than 65 inch in size (at least at the beginning). Youda Optoelectronics, Foxconn, BOE, TCL and other display panel manufacturers are also preparing 10.5 generation production lines. Samsung's plans are not yet clear.
Although there are still many unknowns, it is clear that there will be many consumer grade 8K TVs of major brands on IFA 2018.
